About Kappa Psi

Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity (considered the world's largest professional
pharmaceutical fraternity) was founded on May 30, 1879 at the Russell Military
Academy in New Haven, Connecticut. Initially, it was a literary Greek- letter society
which evolved into a medical-pharmaceutical fraternity and continued as such
until 1924. At that time, by mutual agreement, the members of both professions
decided to separate into two distinct groups. The medical group became Theta
Kappa Psi. The pharmaceutical group retained the name Kappa Psi.

Today, Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity has over 45,000 members, 71
collegiate chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States, and
43 graduate chapters in various cities and states. Thousands of Kappa Psi members
are actively serving in all areas of their chosen professions: in teaching, research,
colleges, industry, U.S. public health service, the armed forces and government
agencies, as well as in hospital and community pharmacy. One will find Kappa Psi
brothers in every state and in almost every major city in the country as well as
foreign countries.
About Boston Graduate Chapter

The Boston Graduate Chapter was installed in Boston on May 17, 1912.  Preston
W. Eldridge, Jr., Grand Secretary-Treasurer, who installed Mu Chapter in 1907,
returned to Boston to present the charter and install the officers of the new chapter.
Eleven members composed the charter group and Dr. Leopold Bartel was elected
the first Regent.  Since this was the first graduate chapter that was organized in the
New England area, the chapter appealed to all members in the area, about one
hundred at that time, to affiliate with the new chapter. The chapter began a strong
scholarship program in 1938 when it established a fund for the "Boston Graduate
Chapter Scholarship".
Boston Graduate Chapter Today

The Boston Graduate Chapter has dedicated itself to becoming more active within
the fraternity and the results have been remarkable.  At the 51st Grand Council
Convention in San Diego, California, Boston Grad was awarded 5th place in the
top international graduate chapter of 2003 rankings.  The award is a testament to
the hard work and dedication of past regents such as Frank Petrillo, Christian
Hartman, and Claudio Faria.   These men have done an excellent job of
revitalizing the chapter and encouraging more involvement from its members.

The chapter’s current officers are Michael Cournoyer, regent;  Erick Sousa, vice
regent;  William Prince, secretary;  Joseph Giunta, treasurer;  Saumil Patel,
historian; Beno Thompson, chaplain; David Caristi, webmaster;  and Claudio Faria,
continuing education coordinator.   The office of CE coordinator was added to the
chapter  in 2002 and has been successful in providing information on local CE
opportunities as well as new drug literature.  At the 2002 Province 1 formal in
Boston we were able to hold a CE for the many visiting brothers, and at the 51st
GCC, Claudio Faria presented a CE course for the brothers in attendance.

Boston Grad continues to hold strong ties with Mu chapter.   We are delighted  to
announce that we now offer a scholarship to our collegiate brothers at the
Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.   We have not offered a scholarship in some
time and look forward to assisting our deserving collegiate brothers.   In 2001
brother Christopher Cormier organized an indoor street hockey night where the
graduates faced off against the collegiates.   The event was a blast and has
become an annual event for the graduate chapter.

Boston Grad had a blast at the 52nd GCC in Pittsburgh.  In addition to having 15
members present, the chapter placed 3rd in the Grad Chapter of the Year voting.
Special congratulations to Claudio Faria for being elected the Fraternity's Grand
Historian.  We'd also like to thank brother Erick Sousa for doing a fine job and
making us proud of his work as the Collegiate Member-at-Large during his two year
term.

The recent accomplishments of Boston Graduate chapter have made all of us very
proud and encouraged many graduates to  come out from hiding and become
more involved.  Still, there are many brothers out there that we’d love to hear
from.   We look forward to hearing from these brothers so that we can continue to
prosper as a graduate chapter.
Boston Graduate Chapter Scholarship

In 2004 the Boston Graduate Chapter resurrected the Boston Graduate
Scholarship.  The scholarship was established in 1938 and is awarded to brothers
who display outstanding service to Kappa Psi, academic prowess, and financial
need.
